Medical imaging becoming more convenient and affordable for patients

Medical imaging is fundamental to both the diagnosing and treatment of patients in modern healthcare. Medical imaging, also known as radiology, includes non-invasive tests that allow doctors to better assess patients' bones, organs, tissue, and blood vessels without being intrusive to the patient.

Medical imaging is also a key part of improved outcomes in modern medicine.

However, the cost, when, and where patients can receive imaging services vary widely.

It's one of the reasons Saltzer Health, an Intermountain Health company, has a Medical Imaging Center that not only provides advanced state-of-the-art imaging but also remains convenient and cost-effective.

By not having the large overhead of a hospital, an outpatient imaging center like the one at Saltzer Health's Ten Mile Clinic can offer services at a lower cost. Because it's connected to the 24-hour urgent care facility, some imaging services are always available.

"Many healthcare services used to be available during regular business hours. Anything outside of that, people had to go to an emergency room," said Rourke Yeakley, M.D., medical director of Saltzer Health Urgent Care. "Now we make health services available when it's convenient for people so they don't skip out on needed care."

According to Dr. Yeakley, there are many situations in which people would need imaging services outside of emergency care. In many instances, their doctor will order imaging, but they do it on their own time.

For example, patients who have received treatment for cancer will have regular CT scans to see if their cancer is still in remission, while others may need an MRI to make sure an injury is healing properly.

The Saltzer imaging clinic offers CT, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, and DEXA scans. All of the services at Saltzer's imaging center are offered from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day, with X-ray and CT scans available 24 hours a day.
